A burst pipe is one of the fastest ways to do real damage to a home. Water spreads quickly, and every minute counts. If it happens to you, here is exactly what to do first.
Shut off the water
Find your main shutoff valve and turn it clockwise to stop the flow. It is usually in the basement, near the water meter, or where the main line enters the house. For a single fixture, use its local shutoff instead.
Kill the power if needed
If water is near outlets, electronics, or your electrical panel, shut off power to that area at the breaker. Never stand in water to reach a panel.
Contain and document
Move furniture and valuables out of the water
Soak up standing water with towels if it is safe
Take photos for your insurance before you clean up
Then call a plumber
Once the water is off, call us. A real person answers 24/7, and we will talk you through the rest while a licensed plumber heads your way.
