How often should you flush your water heater?

Sediment builds up at the bottom of every tank water heater over time. Left alone, it makes the unit work harder, run less efficiently, and fail sooner. Flushing the tank clears it out.

How often

For most homes, once a year is the right schedule. If you have hard water, twice a year is better. A unit that is never flushed often shows it with popping or rumbling sounds as sediment hardens.

Signs it is overdue

• Rumbling or popping from the tank

• Hot water that runs out faster than it used to

• Rusty or cloudy hot water

• Higher energy bills with no other cause
